Here is a list of some of the most controversial video games produced, from the just plain sick and sadistic to the completely insane and wrong. If you are a gamer, and I mean serious gamer, chances are some of you have played a few of these games. With any luck, you will not become a zombie slave to the violence portrayed in these games and go "postal" and that you know your right from wrong. Unfortunately, this is not the case for some of the kids who have been influenced by these games.

Merely the mention of the name "Saw" brings disgusting images of the movies, which made it infamous. The game is even more so. The controversy comes in that there is no moral message attached to the game and that the terrible and gag reflex invoking scenes are but fodder for the sadistic. The game more or less picks up after the first movie, leaving plenty of room for sequels. In it, Detective Tapp is trapped in the abandoned Insane Asylum that Jigsaw calls home. He has to make his way through traps galore and is made to do things that are more than disgusting, like dig a key out of someone's abdomen. The game is riddled with mini games and sounds like a blast to play.

Originally intended for the Sega CD, this game swapped systems like a revolving door. The first of its kind to utilize VHS tapes instead of ROM cartridges, it is most famous for the senate hearings it produced that forced it from shelves in late 1993. The hearings set against violence against women failed to note that the player is not capturing and killing women; rather, the player is attempting to save the girls from capture by blood sucking vampires. There is no nudity in the game but there is a controversial nightgown scene that the congressional hearings used against it. It really did not matter though because the game sucked as games go. The continuous run of VHS tape meant that the player missed scenes when they tried to capture the vampires, called Augers, in traps set up around the house that the women were holding a slumber party in, despite five other women disappearing there. Even with its short run, the game was considered a success.

Carmageddon is the pre-runner of games like Driver and Grand Theft Auto. In the game, you have a time limit to make it from point A to point B but you can get bonus time for smashing your opponent's car or for running over pedestrians. Enter the controversy, as many of the ratings companies did not think running over pedestrians was a very cool thing to do. The game took off in the UK when the pedestrians were made into zombies, as it is apparently okay to run over zombies. Ultimately, it is a competitive racing game that came just a little before its time. It has been pulled from development while fans of the game continue to flock to fan sites and post their expectations.

This controversial game and its sequels are the subject of numerous lawsuits involving violence. This includes one case where a 17 year old learned how to kill police officers in a cop killing training session in one of the Grand Theft Auto games. The boy, then 17, learned how to take a policeman's gun, kill him with it, and kill another policeman and a dispatcher before escaping in a police car. GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and its sequels promote assassinations, gang violence, and the use of prostitutes. The gamer is then given the option to murder and rob the prostitute after using them. In another case, a 10 year old learned how to drive from the game and took the family car on a ten-mile trip before crashing. The most surprising feature of GTA is in the online version. You can have sex with another online player. While this was banned from the game, they makers left the code in and anyone with just a little knowledge of code can still utilize the code. This game has sold billions of dollars’ worth of violence and is still going strong.

If ever there were a touchy subject upon which to make a video game, this is it. However, the creator of Columbine RPG actually sends a message that, while misunderstood at first and still not gotten by many, sheds some real light on the possible motivations behind the attacks. This game has caused a lot of harsh emotions and bad feeling for many people but there many who see the game as necessary for the healing of a nation that still feels bewildered by the event and its subsequent media madness. Since I have never played the game and do not intend to, I reserve judgment except to say that it definitely qualifies for this list.

This tasteless game is not only in poor taste but it is, according to gamers, not much fun to play. The creator is Eric Vaughn, who also runs a website called Electronic Retard. The website is also frowned upon by almost everyone as tasteless and just downright wrong. The only thing the creator has gotten out of the deal is banned from ever visiting Germany. In the game, an American kills Muslims with a wide variety of guns dropped to him from an airplane. That is about it.

The Scottish Company that made this game claims that it is intended to help clear up whether or not the Warren Commission’s findings were correct. It places the gamer in the shoes of the assassin and allows the President to be killed again. Sick. The game has been denounced by practically everyone with the late senator Kennedy calling it, despicable. This is clearly a sick attempt to get rich by exploiting a great American tragedy.

In this ultimate game of hate crimes, the gamer has to run through the ghetto killing blacks and Latinos as a Klansman or skinhead. Once he has killed them, he descends into the subway to kill Jews. In this second level, he finds the Jewish control center and kills former Israel Prime Minister Sharon to win the game. It is so hard to believe that anyone would allow this game to hit the market. Yet, there it is. A Genesis 3D open source game developed by Resistance Records, it was unsuccessfully lobbied against by The Anti-Defamation League. I guess that just goes to show that the civil rights given to us can work against us as well.

The ultimate example of poor taste in a video game, the original version of this garbage had Custer, George Armstrong Custer, dodging arrows to get to an Indian woman named Revenge. If he makes it across the screen, he rapes her. Needless to say, this game was met with plenty of opposition from human rights groups and feminine activists until it was finally pulled from the market. The company, Mystique, was sold and the new company tried to remarket the game with modifications. Playaround re-named the game Westward-Ho and changed some of the graphics so that it was Revenge who wanted Custer and instead of dodging arrows, she dodged cannonballs. It was eventually pulled from the market altogether. Disgusting.

From Japan and Illusion come this game of unadulterated rape of a woman and two children. How in hell this game made it through Japan's Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women laws, enacted in 1985, I will never know. What I do know is that entire nations have voiced their concerns over it. They are outraged, especially by the fact that this Rape game was being sold on Amazon. After much ado was made over the subject, Amazon pulled it from sales but far too little, far too late for me. The game is from the rapist perspective and he is given control over what positions to use and is allowed to rape the children. Totally and completely wrong.
