Top 10 Attempts at Perpetual Motion that Failed

Perpetual motion is motion that, once started would never stop. It would continue to be in motion without the benefit of outside or external influence and thus generating energy. The problem is that perpetual motion is impossible according to the laws of physics, specifically the first two laws of Thermodynamics. The basis of the impossibility lies in that as long as the laws of physics are accurate and unchanging, then perpetual motion remains a mere flight of fancy. It takes energy to create energy. You cannot get something from nothing. However, the laws of physics are as of yet, incomplete so if there is an exception to the rule, we have not found it yet. It is because of this, creative inventors still strive to defy the laws of physics by trying to create a perpetual motion machine.

A working model that would create free energy would rid humankind of its need to rape his planet to survive. Here are some of the top attempts at creating perpetual motion.

The inventor of this wonderful device is either a genius who is far before his time, or a raving lunatic who is mechanically inclined despite his warped and imagined ravings. Perhaps that is what will be needed to breech the perpetual motion barrier. He very aptly points to the impending resource wars, which will be inevitable if this planet's inhabitants do not come up with a source of abundant free energy. His device, called the N-1-Homopolar Generator (Keep it clean, people) is based on a theory that there is a force beyond which can be seen outside of anything that is not downstream in the timeline of space, in which we will never be while still occupying the "present moment." How convenient for him. Without explaining the how in laymen's terms, the machine extracts energy from the cosmic energy field which surrounds us, or so the inventor says, may he rest in piece.

Joseph Newman developed a machine or a motor that he claims and has proven controversially, would generate more power than was needed to actually run it. The device has been shown, in fact, to charge the batteries to which it was attached and to perform an operation much longer that can be performed on a battery alone. It works by spinning a rotating magnet inside an electromagnetic coil such as one created by the wrapping of copper coil. The trick, among other variances is the length of the coil being so long that the voltage does not make a complete circuit before the energy is tapped. There was a lengthy court battle with the patent office in which mistakes were made on both sides and the patent was never given in the U.S. although the Ray-o-vac Corporation has worked with Newman in development of other adaptations.

The machine will not qualify as a perpetual motion device as it breaks the rule of needing energy to create energy. There are still opponents to the claims made by Newman and his supporters that motor windings do not constitute energy. Sorry Mr. Newman, we hope you keep trying. Your claims that any home that has one of your machines would never need to pay another electric bill gives us hope.

Is it a hoax or a breakthrough? Can the Steorn Company produce perpetual motion created energy or are they cleverly garnering brand name recognition? We will not know until late 2010 or 2011 if we ever know at all. In August of 2006, Steorn Ltd. announced it had developed a source of free, clean, and constant energy and clearly admitted that their findings were in direct violation of the laws of physics, specifically the principal of Conservation of Energy, which states basically that you cannot create nor can you destroy energy. It remains constant within a system. The defiant company challenged the scientific community to test their machine, which operates off an equally defiant electromagnetic principal. The jury of scientists that was chosen to dispute the claim tested the machine and found it lacking. Nonplussed, the company says that the machine was not properly tested. They say that they will prove it conclusively later this year; however, if you wish to witness the test, you have to pay a fee. This is no big surprise, right?

The Simple Magnetic Overunity Toy, or SMOT, was developed back in 1985 by a clever Australian named Greg Watson. As the name implies, the simplicity of it is what makes it so unique. You place a steel ball at one end of a non-magnetic track, which is paralleled on either side either by several strong magnets or bar magnets that run its length. The poles of the magnets are together at the opposite end so that the magnetic pull is stronger there. The ball is drawn by the magnetic force to the other side of the track. While this is a great show of Overunity energy and an excellent path towards perpetual motion, no one has routed the ball around to its original starting point. When someone figures out a way to do this, the ball will move perpetually until the track wears out or the magnets lose their strength, both of these obstacles would take a very long time. The Searl Effect Generator claims to be an open system energy-converting machine that uses a drop in temperature in the surrounding air and the device to convert ambient energy to electricity. This is a bold statement of a device that uses four distinct materials in three separate stages. According to Professor Searl, when he first activated the device and it reached superconductivity, it created an anti gravity effect. The materials used are a rare metal called Neodynium, Teflon, permanent magnetic material, and copper. The gear-looking wheels are set in three stages each one smaller than the last and a steel ball floats around the contraption.

Unfortunately, he claims that his earliest work and notes were lost in a house fire that cannot even be confirmed as happening. His only real witness to the event is his son, who notes that the ball was suspended by a fine wire, and he has no tenure at any university or college so his professorship is not proven and can only be a self-proclaimed title. He does have a following of believers, however in the UFO and Free Energy communities.

I wonder if he has ever seen Bigfoot.

Canadian inventor Thane Heins named his invention after a writing technique called peripety, (Greek) the dramatic turning point in a story. This different perpetual motion attempt takes advantage of back EMF. (Electromagnetic force.) He admits that he is really not sure if the device generates perpetual motion induced energy. His claim is that he has achieved up to 7000% increased efficiency with a bi--toroidal transformer. If I understand what that means, he can dramatically increase the amount of energy a transformer can put out. Increased efficiency at a low cost would be huge today.

Scientists who examined and tested the device were amazed to find that it could speed up the motors they hooked it to without being able to explain how. Even a professor at MIT who ran his own, independent tests could not explain how the machine increased a motors ability to produce energy faster and more efficiently. It may not be perpetual motion, but if it cuts down on my electric bills I am all for it.

The Perendev motor is just that, a motor that runs not on fuel but on magnetic force or the force of magnet repulsion. The motor is mostly steel encased which increases the magnetic strength where there is no steel. Many people have tried to build a working model with mixed results and no clear successes. However, most of the engineers who have worked on it believe the theory is sound and continue to try. The inventor, Mike Brady, eventually declared bankruptcy and was then arrested for embezzlement, overshadowing any success he might have had with it. He had sold hundreds of the motors for over a million Euros without delivering a single one.

There is energy all around us. It exists in space even where matter is not present. This invisible energy is called vacuum energy. The Motionless Electromagnetic Generator (MEG) is supposed to be able to tap into this free source by means of the Overunity principal. Since there is no working prototype, there is no patent on the machine and it remains a theory until someone decides to build it and work out the kinks, which will never happen since it defies the first rule of Thermodynamics. Wouldn't this be a great time for everyone except the inventor to be wrong? Free energy is something that we really need right now.

Overunity appears to be the way to go as we present another one that claims it can generate more power than it is supplied. Unfortunately, the over--unity theory remains a theory a no one has yet to produce a machine that can actually do the work it is designed to do. However, in 1969, the late Robert George Adams invented the Adams Switched Reluctance Pulsed DC Permanent Magnet Motor Generator. Reluctance is simply the measurement of force in opposition to magnetic flux, analogous to the resistance of electricity. Did I actually say that? Wow, I am impressed with myself. Now if I just understood it.

Andrew Thorpe is an experimenter in New Zealand who rebuilt the machine to test it and concludes that the effectiveness of the results was an illusion and the device failed. Oh well, it was a nice try.

The overbalanced wheel is possibly the most popular theory that new thinkers come up with in their minds when trying to work out perpetual motion. Even those who know that the wheel has been proven to not work in any mechanical design, people still strive to figure a way to make it work, coming up with more unusual and creative designs. The reason folks still try is that so many people know about gravity and so few know about torque. Putting it in as basic terms as possible, torque is a burst of energy at the center created when rotation occurs at a perimeter. The energy is the same as the force it takes to make the turn, canceling out any hope of creating more energy than it takes to produce movement. Even said simply it is confusing. Bhaskara's wheel uses mercury, which would flow outward during the down motion and then flow back to center during the upswing. The amount of force is the same both ways so the energy created is not enough to prevent friction from stopping the wheel.

Guess what? FAIL. Keep trying.

Maybe, someday someone will figure out perpetual motion without actually breaking any of the laws the people with big brains came up with. My bet is that it is something simple that everyone has overlooked and we will all be slapping our foreheads thinking how dumb we were to have missed the obvious. In the meantime, we will just have to keep using up our planets fossil fuels and hope the solution comes before we have to fight for the last of it among ourselves.
